A leukopak is a concentrated suspension of white blood cells (WBCs) obtained from peripheral blood through leukapheresis. It is apheresis-enriched and contains a higher concentration of WBCs, including monocytes, lymphocytes, platelets, plasma, and red blood cells, compared to standard venipuncture collection methods or buffy coat products.
Leukapheresis is a procedure that separates WBCs from other blood components using a continuous flow centrifuge. The leukopak product is then collected in a sterile bag containing an anticoagulant. Leukopaks are typically composed of 50-70% lymphocytes, 20-30% monocytes, and 10-20% granulocytes. They may also contain small numbers of other cell types, such as dendritic cells, natural killer cells, and platelets.
